If you are applying for jobs, one thing that is vital before doing so is checking your social media accounts to ensure you are giving off the right impression to potential employers.
Yes, your social posts about how drunk you got last night might give your friends a good giggle – but it could cost you a job according to Jobvite’s 2014 edition of its annual Social Recruiting Survey.
The data from Jobvite showed that 93% of hiring managers will review a candidate’s social profile before making a hiring decision. That said, a staggering 55% have reconsidered a candidate based on what they find, with most 61% of those reconsiderations being negative.
So what checks should students check before applying for jobs this May?
Be careful of what you post.
Make sure you don’t post anything that could give a bad representation of you to potential employers. A common mistake is thinking that you can have a little moan about something or someone on one of your social media accounts. It can make you look unprofessional and a potential employer may be worried that you may act confrontational or cause them a problem in the future. Therefore you should avoid petty arguments, inflammatory comments and sharing inappropriate content.
Ensure your spelling and grammar is up to scratch.
Many of us think it doesn’t matter about spelling and grammar on social networks. But when you think about it, you are publishing something to the web for anyone to see. Take a look what you have posted on your accounts and edit or delete any mistakes: 66% of hiring managers said they would hold poor spelling and grammar against candidates. It’s not the end of the world on your personal account but employers might want you to post on their social networks during your contract. If you are writing on behalf of your company or representing a business, then check the content that you post. Bad spelling and grammar can impact a businesses credibility in the eyes of their readers.
Consider your privacy settings
If you represent yourself well on social media, it could be a useful tool to get you ahead of other candidates. However, if you feel that there is too much that may go against you but you don’t want to part with your photographs of a traffic cone on your head, then you need to look into the privacy settings on your accounts. You can change your privacy settings so that anyone you are not friends with can’t access your account. You can also set your account so that it doesn’t come up in Google searches and unless you have mutual friends, a potential employer will not be able to find your account. Technology today, huh?!
Check your LinkedIn information.
Described as the social media site for professionals, LinkedIn is likely to be the first social network that a potential employer looks at. Ensure you have a smart looking photograph, not one of you on a night out. Also, don’t forget to add any volunteering experience you might have done. Jobvite’s survey said that evidence of volunteering or giving donations to charity left 65% of recruiters walking away with a positive impression. Get your past employers or colleagues to add a recommendation to your profile. Recommendations can give potential employers faith that you are a good candidate to interview or employ.

Share your blog posts via your social accounts so that you have a good variety of content on your social profiles, not just your thoughts on your favourite TV programmes.
