Interesting fact: “I am a huge theatre junkie and Beatles obsessed.”

What I love most about London are the parks, the architecture, the people, the West End, the markets, the views – EVERYTHING!”

Top West End Theatre Shows

There are many things that make London the greatest city in the world. One of the biggest reasons (in my opinion) is the theatre scene. The West End is one of the biggest in the world – very comparable to New York City’s Broadway. With over 35 shows playing, there are a lot to choose from – and that’s just the West End! With fringe productions, off-west end, and independent shows, there are well over 100 choices of theatre to decide from.

Today though, we’re going to focus on the West End. I’m very much into musical theatre, so I’ve given a quick guide to my personal favorite shows in the city, where they are located, and how to find the cheapest seats!

Memphis

Memphis takes place in 1950’s Memphis, Tennessee and tells the story of Huey Calhoun, a radio DJ on the quest to bring black music into the homes of white folks.  It’s a show filled with some of the greatest vocals and dancing you’ll see on the West End!

Cheap tickets: £20 front row seats are available on the day from 10AM at the box office every performance on the day – must be purchased in person.

Miss Saigon

Taking place during the Vietnam War, American soldier Chris meets Kim a young bar girl who’s just entered the Vietnamese prostitution crowd.  Falling in love right before they are ripped apart, the story tells of their quest to reunite and the post-war changes that have occurred since their night together.

Sunny Afternoon

This show tells the story of The Kinks as the find their way to fame. From the Davies bedroom in Muswell Hill to their failed tour in America, we see the ups and downs that this band goes through as they get bigger and bigger. Belting hits from ‘Lola,’ to ‘Waterloo Sunset,’ you are guaranteed to be moving in your seat!

Playing at: Harold Pinter Theatre

Cheap tickets: £15 seats scattered through the house are available Friday mornings, 10AM – can be purchased over the phone, online, or in person.

The Book of Mormon

Created by the writers of South Park, this show WILL make you laugh! This is a satirical musical about two Mormon missionaries and their adventures in Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the village. Through this, they attempt to spread the Mormon word to the people of the village, all while trying to avoid any harm – they of course don’t

Playing at: Prince of Wales Theatre

Cheap tickets: 20 pound front row seats are available through a lottery held daily two hours before curtain.

Les Miserables

A theatre classic – Les Miserables takes place during the revolution in 19th century France.  It tells the story of Jean Valjean and his journey to redemption after nineteen years in jail. He breaks parole and is being hunted by police officer Javert.  On the side of this story, we are introduced to a group of young schoolboys brewing a revolt to fight for freedom.  You will feel every type of emotion throughout this show, and leave wanting to go back – guaranteed.

Playing at: Queen’s Theatre

Cost: There are usually returns that can be purchased from the theatre on the night of the show.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

This musical tells the life of Carole King – her songwriting career that led her to fame, her professional and personal partnership with Gerry Goffin, as well as the growing friendship with fellow songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.  Using the music of Carole King, you’ll hear hits from ‘You’ve Got A Friend,’ to ‘Up On The Roof,’ and will be tapping your toes through the entire night.

Playing at: Aldwych Theatre

Cheap tickets: There are usually returns that can be purchased from the theatre the night of the show.

Cats

This show highlights a tribe of cats called the Jellicles. The Jellicles make a choice of a cat that will rise above the ground to the Heaviside Layer and come back to an entirely new life.  This is one of the longest running musicals in theatre history, and a must-see for everyone.

Playing at: London Palladium

The Commitments

Ready for some soul? Based on the 1987 novel of the same name, the story follows a group of kids in Dublin as they make their way into the music scene to become the world’s greatest soul band.  ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone,’ ‘Knock On Wood,’ ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ are just a few of the incredible throwbacks you’ll be hearing through the night.  It’s a great story that will have you on your feet by the end of the night!

Playing at: The Palace Theatre
