The Battersea Transport Guide for Students

29th August 2025 Shannan Humphrey General, London Life, Travel

Living in Battersea puts you in the heart of one of London’s most vibrant neighbourhoods — leafy riverside walks, buzzing social spots, and now, thanks to some big transport upgrades, super easy travel around the city. Whether you’re racing to a lecture, catching up with friends in the West End, or heading to an internship across town, Battersea’s transport connections make getting around easy.

Let’s walk through your options – from the brand-new Northern Line station to buses, bikes, and even the river bus – so you can get to know your new patch of London.

The Tube: Battersea Power Station

One of the best things that has happened to Battersea recently? The Northern Line extension. The shiny new Battersea Power Station Tube stop means you can hop straight onto the Bank branch and reach places like Waterloo, London Bridge, Bank, and King’s Cross St Pancras in no time.

That means:

  • Quick trips to uni campuses across the city.
  • Easy access to nightlife in Camden or the West End.
  • No more detours via Vauxhall or Clapham Junction just to get onto the Underground.
  • Nearby, you’ve also got Sloane Square (Circle and District lines) and Victoria Station, both within walking distance or a short bus ride, giving you many route options.

Battersea Park Station

Don’t confuse this one with the tube! Battersea Park Station is a National Rail stop that gets you to London Victoria in just 5 minutes — perfect if you’ve overslept and need to make it to class fast. You can jump on multiple Underground lines from Victoria and connect across the city. The station also links southwards to Peckham Rye, Crystal Palace, and Streatham, opening up more of London’s creative neighbourhoods.

Did you know? It’s only a short walk from Queenstown Road Station, which takes you straight to Waterloo.

Buses in Battersea

Battersea is brilliantly connected by buses, and for students, they’re often the most affordable and flexible way to get around. Key routes include:

  • 44, 137, 211, 452 → head into Victoria, Knightsbridge, Kensington, and the West End
  • 156, 344, 436 → take you south and east to Vauxhall, Elephant & Castle, and Peckham
  • And don’t worry if you’re heading home late: Night buses (N44, N137, etc.) keep Battersea moving after the Tube has shut.

Money-saving tip: Get the 18+ Student Oyster photocard for 30% off Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes. Plus, with the Hopper fare, you can take unlimited bus journeys within an hour for the price of one. Perfect for bouncing between classes, work, and social plans.

Overground Connections

While Battersea itself doesn’t have an Overground stop, Clapham Junction is right on your doorstep. From here, you can head east to Hackney and Stratford, or north to Highbury & Islington — perfect for visiting friends or exploring London’s cultural hubs.

Overground trains run every 10–15 minutes, and fares are the same as the Tube when you tap in with Oyster or contactless.

River Bus: Battersea by Water

Want a commute with a view? The Thames Clippers river bus stops at Battersea Power Station Pier and whisks you into central London in minutes:

  • Battersea → Embankment = under 15 minutes
  • Battersea → Canary Wharf = about 40 minutes (with skyline views the whole way)

It’s a fun, scenic option – plus, there’s even an onboard café for your morning coffee.

Walking and Cycling

Battersea is super walkable, and with the Thames Path running right past, you can stroll into Chelsea, Vauxhall, or Wandsworth. Battersea Park itself is also perfect for cycling, jogging, or a fresh-air walk between classes. For short trips, grab a Santander Cycle from one of the local docking stations – they’re less than £2 for quick rides and dotted all over the area.

Smart Student Travel Tips

  • Apply for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard to save on fares.
  • Travel off-peak (outside weekday rush hours) for cheaper, quieter journeys.
  • Mix-and-match routes (bus + Tube or Tube + river bus) for flexibility.
  • Use TfL Go or Citymapper to check the fastest and cheapest real-time options.

From tubes to riverboats, Battersea has travel sorted. You’ll find it easy (and affordable) to reach your campus, explore the city, and make the most of student life in London.
