What to Wear to University to Make a Good First Impression

Cramming of all of your belongings into the family car, enduring a pretty emotional journey, then embarking upon your new life. Needless to say, the first day of university is daunting enough without the added pressure of wondering what to wear.

Alas, first impressions are essential on your first day and your chosen outfit unfortunately plays a big role in that. So to give you some pointers, here’s what both girls and guys should consider wearing on their first day of university to make a good first impression.

Girls

The first day of university is your first chance to show off a bit of your personality to your peers, so it’s best to stay true to yourself with your wardrobe. Alternatively, it is also the chance to reinvent yourself, so don’t be afraid to mix things up if you want a revamped look. In other words, start with your style as you wish to go on.

In terms of dress code on moving in day, casual is key. Remember that today is going to consist of a lot of heavy lifting and unpacking boxes, so dress in something that will be comfortable throughout this process.

Jeans are always a good option because they add a casual comfort to your look, which can be dressed up or down depending on your top. Enabling you to go from flat to bar pretty quickly. Your top half gives you a little more flexibility. Whether you’d consider yourself grungy or girly, you can show off your individual style here.

Whatever you do, wear something suitable for the weather on the day. While you don’t want to work up a sweat unloading boxes, you similarly don’t want to be freezing cold in the crisp September weather. A good option is to go for layers which you can add or remove in case the weather takes a turn.

A decent pair of trainers will also get you far during this day. They are not only practical and trendy, but will also remain comfortable throughout the moving about. If in doubt, wear shoes you’ve had for a while, as this is not the day to break in new, potentially painful footwear.

Guys

Unfortunately, it isn’t just the female freshers who will suffer from what to wear woes. The decision can be just as important for guys. However, it’s again best to opt for something you’ll feel comfortable in.

The simplest solution is smart-casual. For example, a shirt, a comfortable pair of jeans and an already broken into pair of trainers. Again, layering is important in the autumnal weather, so layer with a thin jumper and a jacket if it’s extra chilly.

Don’t be afraid to inject your own personal style into the outfit. For example, a slogan t-shirt or a leather jacket can make you stand out during all the gruelling name learning.

Most importantly, remember that this is likely to be a fairly daunting day, so wear whatever will help you remain relaxed, come rain or shine. Good luck!
